Queensland’s new smoke alarm legislation has been updated.

Queensland will be the safest state in Australia for fire safety, thanks to new smoke alarm legislation.

The new legislation stipulates that Queensland dwellings must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms on all levels.

Three specific periods will be used to roll out interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms throughout Queensland over 10 years, beginning in January 2017.

What does this all mean for your home?

Interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms must be connected to comply with the legislation.

  • All new dwellings and dwellings that have been substantially renovated will be available from January 2017. This applies to all building applications received after January 2017.
  • All domestic dwellings that are rented or sold after January January 20th, 2022
  • All other domestic dwellings: from January 2027
